Lost wax casting is the process of replicating metal sculptures (usually silver, gold, brass or metal sculptures). Bronze is cast from original sculpture. Complex work can be done this way.

The oldest example of lost wax casting is the 6,000-year-old amulet of the Indus Valley civilization. Other examples from a slightly later period are from Mesopotamia in the third millennium BC, and in the hoard of objects found in the cave of the treasure (Dry Mishmar) in the southern Ba (region), which belonged to the Chalcolithic period (4500 – AD) 3500 BC). Conservative age estimates from carbon-14 dating trace these items back to c. 3700 BC, making them more than 5700 years old. Lost wax casting was common in Europe until the 18th century, when the molding process predominated.
